Congrats LBJ Winterguard
LBJ Places 3rd in Section and 9th in Unit at TCGC State Championships!!
By BBoyd • Mar 30th, 2008 • Category: Chelsea, Featured, LBJ WinterguardYesterday I drove down to Houston to watch Chelsea and her winterguard perform at the 2008 Texas Color Guard Circuit Colorguard and Percussion State Championships and got a real treat. Our team placed 3rd in their section and 9th overall in their unit, and performed a show that left the audience slack-jawed. It was awesome to see them having so much fun, and they deserved it. This year’s hard work paid off. I think I have the divisioning worded correctly- the ‘Unit’ being the overall division of teams by size/skill level (I think), and within those units the teams are subdivided into smaller ’sections’ within which they compete due to the number of guards overall. There were around 30 in LBJ’s ‘Unit’-in which they placed 9th, and 10 in the section, in which they placed 3rd. Awesome!
The show “Behind the Iron Curtain” was unique and impactful, chock full of releases, pole-hits, incredible solo work (way to go on the quad toss- WOW), and drama, and the audience felt it. Chelsea had been so nervous; I think she and the rest of the guard really didn’t want to let everyone who was so sure they’d place down. I told her to remember how awful last season was (by no fault of the guard), and how far the guard has come this year, with high placements and scores for the first time in- a long time. I told her, in my mind, she and the guard had already ‘won’ the season, and to think of placing at state as just icing on an already delicious cake. She shared the sentiment with the guard, who agreed, and I hope it helped them remember the real reason they do this is the intangible rewards…the FUN.
With that mindset, Chelsea looked confident and fierce in her show (it’s not a show to smile in, portraying Russian soldiers), and she cried when she got her medal. She told me later she felt silly; but I told her not to. She and everyone else worked so hard, and when it pays off in such a tangible way, that’s emotional, and letting those emotions show is a good thing. It honors her work and accomplishment in a very basic human way. It was definitely a good way to ‘end’ the year’s band extra-curriculars.
I’d planned to have photos or video for our far-flung family but ran into a kerfluffle there. This isn’t the appropriate place for an explanation, because I just can’t do it without a bit of a rant. But, I’m promised (as I have been for so many of these important events) that someone taped it and is making us copies. If/when those copies show up, I’ll be sure to share them with you here. I have some video of other performances which I need to get uploaded….I plan for a dedicated WG photo page soon.
If you want to send your congrats to Chels. and the guard here via comments, I’ll pass them on.
